abstract = "An experimental study was undertaken to determine the value of 2 culture media for the primary isolation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis from seeded sputum samples. It was found that yeast extract agar was superior to modified Sabouraud's agar as recovery rates were 96.8% for the former and 65·6% for the latter. Apparently such effectiveness was due not to the intrinsic nature of the medium itself but that the growth of Candida spp. was discouraged on yeast extract agar. Media poor in carbohydrates, such as yeast extract, should thus be employed when attempting to isolate dimorphic fungi from samples expected to contain Candida spp.",
