El Instituto de Ciencias Naturales (1936-2019): de la historia natural al conocimiento de la biodiversidad en Colombia

Abstract

Se describen y se relacionan en una línea de tiempo los antecedentes institucionales sobre el origen y los hechos más notables del Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, y se analizan los alcances de sus contribuciones al conocimiento de la historia natural en Colombia durante el siglo XX, así como los logros institucionales más importantes en el transcurso de las dos primeras décadas del siglo XXI en la docencia, la investigación y la divulgación científica en torno a la biodiversidad y la conservación de la naturaleza.

We describe the background and main highlights regarding the origins of the Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Institute of Natural Sciences, National University of Colombia) connecting them along a timeline. We also analyze the Institute´s contributions to the knowledge of the natural history of Colombia during the 20th century, as well as its main achievements during the first two decades of the 21st century in the fields of teaching, research, and scientific dissemination of the country’s biodiversity and nature conservation.
